Brought to You by… Sunglasses

In sometimes surprising ways, associations play direct and indirect roles in bringing the products, services, and activities of daily life to people around the world. Including sunglasses.

American Optometric Association: Color, fit, tint, polarized, photochromatic—and what exactly is the deal with UV-A and UV-B, anyway? The American Optometric Association offers a shopping guide to help you pick safe shades. Given the lack of federal regulations regarding quality and protection, this expert advice will help if you’ve always felt in the dark at those sunglasses carousels.

The Vision Council: To mark National Sunglasses Day on June 27, the Vision Council (which merged with the Sunglass Association of America in 2008) invites you to “celebrate sunnies” by posting a selfie in shades on your favorite social media sites—tagged #SunglassSelfie, of course. The goal is to raise awareness of the need to protect our eyes from the sun’s UV rays.

Skin Cancer Foundation: Sun-conscious consumers can look for the Skin Cancer Foundation’s blue-and-yellow Seal of Recommendation on products that meet the organization’s UV-ray sun protection standards. Several styles of sunglasses from Coppertone and Maui Jim have earned this seal.
