Thousands of student affairs educators are in Florida for ACPA 2015, which runs through Sunday, to advance social justice and identify best practices in student learning. Here’s a quick look at the conference.
Association: ACPA—College Student Educators International
Conference: ACPA 2015 Tampa Convention
Venue: Tampa Convention Center
Location: Tampa, Florida
The meeting officially kicked off with an Opening General Session featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas. Three other noteworthy nuggets about ACPA 2015:
Part of ACPA’s mission is to fight for equity and inclusion in higher education. Since this year marks the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the 50th anniversary of many milestones in the U.S. civil rights movement, several sessions will highlight these achievements as a way to both reflect on higher ed’s past and consider its future.
A new interactive program, called the Idea Generator, will make its debut. Facilitated by a “provocateur,” the conversation will begin with a panel of faculty and practitioners. After the dialogue gets going, members of the audience who have something to contribute can “tap out” a current panel member, take their seat, and join the conversation.
Laverne Cox, who stars in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black, will close out ACPA 2015. Cox is the first transgender woman of color to have a leading role on a mainstream, scripted TV show.
