Friday Buzz: Moving Past the Ice Bucket Challenge

The ALS Association connects the dots between regional and national fundraising. Plus: A behind-the-scenes look at what it's like to be part of a media firestorm.

The Big Give S.A., a huge nonprofit fundraiser in San Antonio, begins this Tuesday, with the goal of raising $4 million for the lengthy list of participating organizations.

But that $4 million barely compares to the $100 million raised by the ALS Association’s Ice Bucket Challenge last year.

What’s the connection between the San Antonio event and the ALS Association’s titanic fundraising campaign? ALS Association Texas Chapter Director Tanner Hockensmith explains:

“Something like the Big Give in San Antonio gives almost what a microcosm of what the Ice Bucket Challenge was,” he told KSTAT web news editor Jessica Soto. “It gives the community a chance to not only rally around the ALS Association, but to rally around all of these nonprofits doing great things for the area.”

It just goes to show that even if your organization takes home a huge fundraising victory, it’s still essential to follow through with regional events and engage with local communities, even when your coffers are filled to the brim.
