David Varda, executive director, Ohio Association of School Business Officials, answers questions from OASBO member Eric Soltis
What are some of the biggest challenges that OASBO is currently facing, and how might they be addressed?
School business officials (SBOs) who were my colleagues are now regularly retiring. Those entering the profession have different needs and perspectives than those leaving. We must understand those needs and perspectives to proactively structure programs and engagement opportunities to meet those members’ expectations. In addition, OASBO must continue to advocate for public education in a manner that finds solutions in public policy to address the needs of the diverse school districts we serve.
In what ways will OASBO’s strategic plan improve the organization as a whole?
The strategic plan will address the needs identified through our recent comprehensive member survey and technology assessment. We are reviewing our governance structure to ensure that it can meet those needs. We will also be evaluating how our chapters and committees fit into the governance structure. Other goals include upgrading our technology infrastructure, marketing the value of SBOs specifically to boards of education and superintendents, and creating tools for members to more effectively manage their operations. These goals are focused on increasing the value OASBO members receive from the association.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your role as CEO of OASBO?
I derive the most satisfaction from being able to utilize association resources and support to help a member who is in a difficult situation or at a trying time in their career. Helping our members is definitely the most rewarding part of my job.
