Data Nugget: Ask Them Anything

The rise of voice-enabled digital assistants, and how things could grow from there.

Got a burning question? If you’re like a lot of other consumers, you may be turning more often to a voice-enabled digital assistant like Siri, Alexa, Cortana, or Bixby to find an answer. According to the Pew Research Center, almost half of all Americans (46 percent) said they’ve used one.

And as this technology begins to seep into our everyday life—from voice-enabled showers to TV remote controls to automobiles—at least for now, Americans seem content to ask for help via their smartphone, computer, or tablet, and using standalone devices like Google Home or Amazon Echo.

Percentage of U.S. adults who use digital voice assistants on various devices:

42 percent: Smartphone

14 percent: Computer or tablet

8 percent: Standalone device

3 percent: Other device
