Conference Circuit: Yellow Buses

The National School Transportation Association’s 2018 Annual Meeting and Convention begins this weekend in Philadelphia. Attendance is expected to be 150.

Just about 150 school transportation providers are headed to Philadelphia to hear the latest information on the state of the school bus industry and network with colleagues.

Following an executive committee meeting and delegate breakfast early Monday morning, NSTA 2018 starts at 9 a.m. with a general session. NSTA President Blake Krapf will kick things off, and then attendees will hear from a Transportation Security Administration representative who will discuss its First Observer Plus terrorism-prevention program for transportation professionals. Also on the agenda:

Best in show. The 48th Annual School Bus Driver International Safety Competition will be held in conjunction with the meeting. This competition offers school bus drivers from across the United States and Canada the opportunity to showcase their knowledge and skills and compete for the international title. It includes both a written exam and road course.

Legislative agenda. The meeting features a number of government relations and advocacy-focused events. Among them is a keynote speech by Rep. Lou Barletta (R-Pa.), as well as legislative and regulatory updates from staff and consultants.

Yearly get-together. All attendees are welcome at the NSTA Annual Membership Meeting, which happens Wednesday morning. A number of things will take place, including board elections, strategic plan updates, and the announcement of the school system being awarded the 2018 Zonar Grant.
