Ask the CEO: Rafael Rivera, CAE
Rafael Rivera, CAE, executive director of the Professionals in Human Resources Association, answers questions from PIHRA member Baskaran Ambalavanan.
What is your vision for the next five years?
I foresee a continued and sustainable increase in membership and programs. This is not merely a rosy outlook. It’s based on nine years of association growth. Our organization embraces change, plans for uncertainty, and does not subscribe to zero-sum thinking. There will be greater brand awareness in our service area. Our volunteer leaders and staff will obtain improved onboarding, resources, and training. And HR professionals will be engaged through new partnerships, using cutting-edge technologies.
The world of work is changing dramatically. How will PIHRA help its members to navigate future challenges?
Technology is changing human resource management at a dizzying pace. We are experiencing the inevitable proliferation of emerging technologies, including human capital management, artificial intelligence, and wellness platforms. PIHRA staff and volunteer leaders will proactively identify technologies and applications to lead forward. Our programs will include foundational and applied learning experiences on services, selection, implementation, and best HR practices. Inspirational and motivational general session speakers will be replaced with content intended for practical application. We will augment our professional learning platforms to offer more ongoing opportunities and support via on-demand, mobile, and app-based systems.
What are your plans to expand membership?
Programs and events continue to be our number one platform for member recruitment. We are increasing collaboration with our chapters on regional programming to build awareness and drive local engagement. New in-person programs and events are being created to engage underserved communities. These events are often hybrid in structure. They’re chapter events that are being executed in collaboration with an affiliated organization, service provider, or competitor.
