Data Point: Foundation Donations Dip

It’s the first decline seen in foundation donations in a number of years, according to the Giving USA Foundation.

Many associations have foundations that foster giving in their field. Donations to foundations declined in 2018, according to the most recent Giving USA report, down 6.9 percent from 2017 in real dollars (9.1 percent in inflation-adjusted dollars). This marks the first decline for giving to foundations in recent years. “Giving to foundations is typically volatile from year to year, reflecting both the economic climate and contributions of exceptionally large gifts by both living donors and estates,” the report says.

Giving to Foundations by Year

2015: $38.46 billion

2016: $39.72 billion

2017: $54 billion

2018: $50.29 billion
