Data Point: Coronavirus Raises Big Questions

Event cancellation insurance, contingency plans raise concerns for event planners.

As association executives worldwide were just beginning to reckon with the implications of the coronavirus outbreak that emerged in January—especially its potential impact on meetings and events scheduled for the spring and beyond—a survey by Meetings Professionals International revealed some big areas of uncertainty about associations’ emergency preparedness and risk management practices.

73 percent of respondents were unsure if their current event-cancellation insurance covers communicable diseases such as coronavirus.

67 percent of respondents said their organization had no formal contingency plan for managing human resources in the event that coronavirus was confirmed in their immediate community.
