Social Media Roundup: Nurture Your Public Speaking Skills

Having great public speaking skills is an essential trait for leaders. How polished are you? Also: Embrace emerging leaders in your association. They might have some of their own wisdom to share with you.

You’re standing on a stage alone in front of hundreds of people, about to give a speech or make a presentation. They’re expecting a show. They want to be wowed.

But it’s not about them. It’s about your ability to seamlessly communicate ideas to a large group of people. Are you prepared to deliver?

Any future leader I’ve had contact with is always open to taking in our wisdom and sharing their wisdom.

Why practice can get you there, and more, in today’s Social Media Roundup:

Own The Stage

They say practice makes perfect. Like many other things, public speaking takes practice. Part of it is overcoming the initial fear, and a lot of it is preparing. Practice doesn’t necessarily make you perfect, but it can make you a lot better, and public speaking is a key leadership skill. “It doesn’t matter if you’re never going to speak on stage. It doesn’t matter if you only occasionally present to a few people. Learning the skills of being an effective speaker will give you confidence in all areas of life. Take the time to learn it,” says public speaker John Michael Morgan. (ht @kikilitalien)

Sharing Wisdom

Do you have emerging leaders in your association? Sandy Biback, who has been in the association industry for about 30 years, encourages you to embrace them. They can teach you as much as you can teach them. “Any future leader I’ve had contact with is always open to taking in our wisdom and sharing their wisdom. How can you help them along the way? I’m not talking about a full mentorship here, I’m talking about a simple, let’s have coffee and talk about your future,” she writes. (ht @LWeselowski)
