Ask the CEO: American Industrial Hygiene Association’s Peter O’Neil

The executive director of the American Industrial Hygiene Association answers questions from AIHA member Allan Fleeger.

What are some new ways AIHA should be engaging its members?
I have always said this was a challenging area for us, given the breadth of professional practice of our members. We can’t stop pushing ourselves to use our magazine and scientific journal to actively engage members and customers. The staff team is also continuing to push itself with a variety of social media platforms. At the end of the day, we are in the people business—our members and customers are core to our operation. This area is a constant source of conversation and action.

I normally sleep like a baby, but I do worry about our international laboratory accreditation business outside of North America.

In thinking about the long-term future of AIHA, what keeps you up at night?
I normally sleep like a baby, but I do worry about our international laboratory accreditation business outside of North America. We have a lot of work to do to more fully understand the international marketplace. I also worry about how we can better structure and utilize our local chapter structure. Finally, we are spending a lot of time looking at technology, specifically around web, digital/mobile, and social media. Technology underpins everything we do, and I fear we are losing what used to be our edge in this area.

What are you doing to take care of yourself? Are you having fun?
I don’t have the greatest work-life balance, and it’s something I work on. I am on a new exercise regimen and a low-carb diet, so let’s see if that—coupled with trying to spend more time at home and less time in the air—will help me. As for having fun, I am always having fun. When I stop having fun I am likely in the ground!
