Monday Buzz: What to Consider When Considering Joint Membership

It sounds beneficial, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't think it through first. Here are a few challenges to consider when looking into a joint membership model. Also: Why you should add music to your next presentation.

Many association members like the convenience and added benefits of a unified membership. But is combining membership for national and local chapters right for your group?

The Billhighway blog Chapter Chat shares a few key considerations when pondering the switch to a joint membership model.

First, talk to your members. Survey those who belong to the national and local chapter to determine why they belong to both. Also reach out to members who don’t belong to both for their input.

“This research will also provide what you’ll need later to develop marketing copy and testimonials for joint membership promotions,” explains writer Charlotte Muylaert.

Associations will also need to think through dozens of scenarios, including new member recruitment, revenue modeling, and workflow with the input of both national and local stakeholders. A joint membership model changes the dynamics of national-local chapter relationships, as primary duties will shift between the two.

Meeting Soundtracks

Are you presenting at an upcoming meeting?

Fast Company recommends adding a soundtrack to shake things up a bit and capture your audience’s attention.

“When it’s done right, music is the secret ingredient for a killer presentation,” says Ted Frank, author of Get to the Heart: How Movie Storytelling Secrets Can Make Your Presentation Clear, Compelling, and Earn You a Seat at the Table. “It’s an immediate surprise that signals to everyone that this is not going to be the same as every other presentation they’ve seen that day.”

Fast Company also notes what type of music you should play and when you should play it.
