Conference Circuit: Risky Business

The 2017 Annual Meeting of the Society for Risk Analysis is set to start in Arlington, Virginia, next week. Attendance is expected to exceed 800.

More than 800 risk practitioners and scientists from around the world will make their way to northern Virginia in the coming days to learn, network, and discuss all facets of risk.

Organization: Society for Risk Analysis

Conference: 2017 Annual Meeting

Venue: Crystal Gateway Marriott

City: Arlington, Virginia

Following an opening reception on Sunday evening, SRA 2017 will officially begin on Monday morning with a plenary session. Four panelists will discuss whether risk analysis is an obsolete profession. (Hint: It’s not.) Also on the agenda:

Student aid. Graduate students have three ways to get involved in the annual meeting. They can register to attend the entire three-day conference at a special student rate of $275, take part in any of the 13 half- or full-day workshops at $35 per course, or attend Monday evening’s poster reception for $35.

Winner, winner. All registrants for this year’s meeting will be entered in a drawing to win a one-week, once-in-a-lifetime trip to Norway to visit the risk analysis group at the University of Stavanger with SRA President Terje Aven.

Hot topic. As “alternative facts” and “fake news” become household phrases, panelists in Tuesday’s morning plenary will discuss the role of risk science in maintaining the delicate balance between factual statements and acknowledgement of uncertainty and ambiguity.
