Why Creative Recruiting Matters

When recruiting in a hot job market, “you have to get a little more creative,” says Tracy Hollamon, PRC, senior recruitment specialist at the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Here are three ways she’s powering up hiring at ASA.

1. Think bigger than one job opening. When considering job applicants, Hollamon is “trying to keep people in the pipeline who might not be a fit for one role but might be a fit for a future role. When you see a strong resume come through, you want to hold on to that.”

2. Use recruitment networking. “I’m doing more targeted recruitment on LinkedIn, reaching out to industry professionals and asking them if they know anyone,” and attending association events, she says. “We’ve also been more focused on diversity recruitment and are exploring recruitment sources such as Mom Project,” which connects moms with career opportunities, and Business Career Services of Illinois, which serves people who have been displaced or have disabilities.

3. Tap employee referrals. ASA is stepping up its employee referral program, which includes paid referral bonuses, by recognizing staff who refer new hires. The association also started an intern program, and “we’re hoping that will start providing more of a pipeline of future talent,” Hollamon says.—A.T.B.
