Thousands of dermatology physicians and students are headed to San Francisco for the American Academy of Dermatology’s Annual Meeting, which begins Friday, to hear about new treatments and develop practice-management skills.

Association: American Academy of Dermatology

Conference: 73rd Annual Meeting

Venue: The Moscone Center

Location: San Francisco

More than 3.5 million skin cancers are diagnosed in the United States annually. Rear Admiral Boris Lushniak, MD, MPH—the current deputy surgeon general, who declared skin cancer a national health priority in July 2014—will speak at Sunday’s plenary session about how dermatologists can work with stakeholders to promote skin cancer awareness. Here’s the “skin-ny” on three other interesting things happening at the meeting:

Friday’s “Hot Topics” session will address subjects chosen based on meeting registrants’ top-three medical/surgical and economic/social concerns: how healthcare reform will affect the dermatology field, new acne treatments, and an update on drug reactions.

Let me take a #selfie. AAD is bringing back its selfie contest this year, asking attendees to submit their best photos of themselves—alone or with friends—enjoying the meeting. (You can check out last year’s winning photos.) No word on whether selfie sticks will be readily available.

A series of hands-on workshops, new this year, will give attendees the opportunity to practice techniques on cadaveric specimens or simulation models. Classes cover three areas: nails, dermal fillers, and suturing.
