Conference Circuit: Highway Safety

The Governors Highway Safety Association’s 2018 Annual Meeting begins this weekend in Atlanta. Attendance is expected to top 600.

Hundreds of highway safety leaders from across the country are headed to Georgia to discuss how states can work with the federal government, industry partners, and others to advance traffic safety.

Following a welcome on Sunday evening, GHSA 2018 starts on Monday morning with an opening general session. Heidi King, deputy administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, will share NHTSA’s traffic safety priorities. Then, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal will take the stage and discuss how to get state leaders engaged in traffic safety. Also on the agenda:

New technology. The meeting’s Autonomous Vehicle Roundtable will bring together experts from the automotive, ride-hailing, insurance, and licensing industries to consider the latest developments in this ever-changing field and discuss how states can prepare for these technologies.

Celebrity guest. Tuesday’s Highway Safety Awards Presentation and Luncheon will feature a special guest. NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal—who is also a Clayton County, Georgia, sheriff’s deputy— will make an appearance and help celebrate the winners.

Hot topic. One of the top challenges for highway safety professionals is how to deal with distracted driving. A group of panelists will discuss whether public awareness campaigns are helping to change driver behavior and what else can be done to spark large-scale change.
